An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the inside of your body. It is a safe, painless, and radiation-free imaging method used to examine organs, tissues, blood vessels, and developing babies during pregnancy. Ultrasound is one of the most versatile diagnostic tools available in a clinic setting providing instant visual information that helps our doctor make accurate diagnoses.
At U.n.i Klinik Sandakan, we offer a range of ultrasound scan services for both medical and pregnancy-related needs. Our doctor performs and interprets every scan personally, ensuring you receive a thorough examination and a clear explanation of the findings during the same visit.
An ultrasound scan may be recommended for a wide range of reasons. You should consider booking an ultrasound if:
Ultrasound is non-invasive and uses no radiation, making it safe for all patients including pregnant women, children, and the elderly. It can be repeated as often as clinically needed without any health risk.
Our clinic offers the following ultrasound scan services, all performed and interpreted by our doctor:
Scan Type | What It Examines |
Pregnancy Scan (Obstetric) | Confirms pregnancy, checks fetal heartbeat, growth, position, amniotic fluid, and placenta. Used for dating, viability, and routine antenatal monitoring. |
Abdominal Ultrasound | Examines the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, and bladder. Used to investigate abdominal pain, swelling, abnormal blood tests, or suspected organ pathology. |
Pelvic Ultrasound | Assesses the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding structures. Used for menstrual irregularities, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts, or fertility concerns. |
Kidney Ultrasound (Renal) | Checks for kidney stones, cysts, obstruction, hydronephrosis, or structural abnormalities. Often used when blood or urine tests suggest kidney issues. |
Liver & Gallbladder Ultrasound | Detects gallstones, fatty liver, liver cysts, masses, or bile duct abnormalities. First-line imaging for right upper abdominal pain. |
Musculoskeletal Ultrasound | Examines muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints for tears, inflammation, fluid collections, or soft tissue masses. Useful for sports injuries and chronic pain. |
Soft Tissue / Lump Assessment | Evaluates lumps, bumps, or swellings anywhere on the body to determine whether they are cysts, lipomas, abscesses, or other abnormalities. |
Not sure which type of scan you need? Our doctor will assess your symptoms during the consultation and recommend the most appropriate ultrasound. In many cases, relevant areas can be scanned during the same visit for a comprehensive assessment.
Your visit begins with a consultation where our doctor will review your symptoms, medical history, and the reason for the scan. This helps determine which type of ultrasound is most appropriate and ensures the examination is focused on the right area.
Depending on the type of scan, you may be asked to drink water beforehand for pelvic or bladder scans or fast for a few hours for gallbladder or abdominal scans. Our staff will advise you on any preparation needed when you book your appointment. For most other scans, no special preparation is required.
You will be asked to lie down on the examination bed. Our doctor will apply a water-based gel to the area being scanned which helps transmit the sound waves and produce a clearer image. A handheld device called a transducer is then moved gently over your skin. The images appear in real time on a monitor, and our doctor will explain what you are seeing as the scan progresses.
Since ultrasound images are produced in real time, our doctor can interpret the findings immediately. You will receive a clear explanation of the results during the same visit including whether any follow-up tests, treatment, or specialist referral is needed. For pregnancy scans, our doctor will review your baby's development and answer any questions you may have.
Yes. Ultrasound is one of the safest imaging methods available. It uses sound waves instead of radiation to produce images which is why it is the preferred imaging method during pregnancy. There are no known harmful effects from diagnostic ultrasound and the scan can be repeated as often as needed without any health risk.
The procedure is completely painless. You may feel slight pressure as the transducer is moved over your skin, and the gel may feel cool, but there is no discomfort involved. The scan typically takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on the area being examined.
Our clinic uses modern ultrasound equipment maintained to clinical standards, and every scan is performed personally by our doctor to ensure accuracy and thoroughness.
Every ultrasound at our clinic is performed and interpreted by our qualified doctor. You get a thorough examination with real-time findings explained to you directly.
From pregnancy scans to abdominal, pelvic, kidney, and musculoskeletal ultrasound, we cover a comprehensive range of diagnostic imaging needs under one roof.
No waiting days for a report. Our doctor reads and explains the ultrasound findings during the same visit, so you leave with answers and a clear plan.

It depends on the type of scan. For pelvic and bladder ultrasounds, you will need a full bladder by drinking 3 to 4 glasses of water about one hour before your appointment. For gallbladder or abdominal scans, you may be asked to fast for 4 to 6 hours before the scan. For pregnancy scans, musculoskeletal, and most other scans, no special preparation is needed. Our staff will advise you when you book.
A dating scan is typically recommended between 6 to 10 weeks of pregnancy to confirm the pregnancy, check for a heartbeat, and estimate the due date. Subsequent scans are usually scheduled at 12 weeks (nuchal translucency), 20 weeks (detailed anatomy scan), and the third trimester as needed. Our doctor will advise on the best schedule for your situation.
Ultrasound can detect masses, lumps, and abnormal growths in organs and soft tissues. While it cannot definitively diagnose cancer on its own, it is an important first-line tool that helps determine whether a lump is a cyst (fluid-filled) or solid, and whether further investigation such as a biopsy or CT scan is needed.
Most ultrasound scans take around 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the area being examined and the type of scan required. More detailed examinations may take slightly longer.
Ultrasound scans are generally painless and do not use radiation. You may feel slight pressure as the probe moves over the skin, especially if the area being examined is tender.
